Claire Kinsella uses locally foraged willow along with her own grown crops to create her utterly wonderful baskets. Traditional in every way yet there seems to prevail a modern look to her work. Curved edges meet straight lines, the rustic material is weaved into contemporary forms. Claire has a skill that comes naturally to her, from the basketry process itself right through to her keen eye for spotting hedgerow gems to incorporate into each piece.
This Binhay Basket is one of our all time favourite shapes from Claire. There is a lovely relationship between the height of the body and the straight(ish) handle. It has a primitive feeling in its look, yet it works so well amongst contemporary surroundings. The weave is extraordinary on this piece, the willow is twisted in the two rows below the zig zagging of the centre; quite how Claire managed this, we will never know. A really amazing basket.
