Jack Bailey, of Havelock Studio, is a designer maker based in the North Downs of Kent. Originally trained as an architect, Jack's practice now focuses on products rooted in concept and purpose. Using traditional and modern manufacturing, Jack marries materials together seamlessly. Often sourcing timber from his families’ woodland that he manages, there is an undercurrent of sustainability and provenance within his work. He believes good design must use good materials and we are inclined to agree.
This beautiful Cake Stand combines two polar opposites in materials, ash and concrete. The appearance of this piece is rather architectural; the mix of the two materials and its sweeping curved underside reminds us of contemporary buildings. This is even reflected in the stainless steel pin, which runs through the center of the structure. The painstaking finishing of the piece demanded Jack to carefully sand the ash one way and the concrete the other, to meet perfectly together. Finally, a cork bottom has been added to make sure your surfaces are protected.
Sculptural and delicious, even without the cake!
